Maroon Dam, located on Burnett Creek in the Scenic Rim, is managed by Seqwater and supplies water for both irrigation and urban use as part of the Logan River Supply Scheme. It’s also used for recreation and plays a role in mitigating floods.

One way to achieve better availability of water for agriculture in SEQ is through unlocking additional storage at Maroon Dam.

Why Maroon Dam?

Maroon Dam is currently filled to half it’s designed water storage capacity due to infrastructural constraints. There are several potential improvements that could be made to address these constraints and substantially increase the water available in the dam.

What would potential improvements involve?

  • Increasing storage capacity for example by raising the height of the dam’s spillway
  • Strengthening the dam wall (embankment) to reduce erosion and seepage
  • Upgrading the spillway to safely manage floodwaters

Potential impacts

Any upgrades to Maroon Dam would be carefully assessed to manage social, cultural and environmental impacts. Early investigations have found no major environmental concerns at this stage.

Potential benefits

  • More reliable water for crops and livestock
  • Better resilience to drought
  • Stronger local food production
  • Job creation during project construction and long-term through increased farming
  • Improved water availability for town water supply, emergencies and local growers

Have your say

We are inviting feedback from farmers, industry, and the community to help shape the future of water for agriculture in SEQ. Consultation is open until 12 December 2025.
