Using recycled water is one way to make water supply more secure and sustainable for agriculture in South East Queensland. Recycled water is a safe and climate resilient source for farmers to grow crops, especially during dry times. Recycled water use also helps reduce pressure on other water sources such as dams.
What is recycled water?
It’s water that has already been used and then treated to a high standard so it can be safely reused. It can be used for:
- irrigating crops
- supporting local industries
- watering parks and gardens.
Using recycled water helps reduce reliance on rainfall and makes the most of the water we already have.
Why is recycled water needed?
- Water demand is growing in farming areas like the Warrill Valley
- Current water supply is heavily rainfall dependent
- Recycled water is safe, reliable and available year-round, even during drought
- Extreme weather events (drought and flood) are making water supply less reliable
Where would the recycled water come from?
Early assessments show that the Warrill Valley and nearby areas could benefit most from recycled water use. Two potential solutions are:
- A new pipeline from the Bundamba Advanced Water Treatment Plant to Kalbar. This larger-scale option could support future growth.
- Local treatment plant at the Kalbar and Boonah wastewater plants. This is a smaller-scale, lower-cost option that could grow over time as needed.
What are the benefits?
- More reliable water for farmers.
- Reduces reliance on rivers and dams.
- Supports jobs and food security.
- Makes better use of existing water resources.
- Helps protect the environment.
Have your say
We are inviting feedback from farmers, industry, and the community to help shape the future of water for agriculture in SEQ. Consultation is open until 12 December 2025.
